The San Siro, or Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is the home stadium of A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale, two of Italy’s most successful football teams. With a capacity of over 85,000, it is the largest football stadium in Italy. Named after Giuseppe Meazza, a famous Inter Milan and A.C. Milan player of the 1930’s and 40’s, the San Siro has become one of the world’s most venerated football stadiums.
The stadium was constructed in 1925 and keen that the fans should be as close to the pitch as possible, the owners insisted that and that the San Siro was to be used exclusively for football. The combination of the fans being so close to the pitch, the stands being very steep and the roof being so big has created an atmosphere within the stadium that is hard to match anywhere else. Tickets for games can be surprisingly inexpensive if bought in advance and during the football season, there is a game on every weekend.
If your visit to Milan does not coincide with a game, fear not, the San Siro museum is dedicated to the history of A.C. Milan and Inter Milan and is well worth the visit. Incorporated within the stadium complex, the museum opens between 10am, and 5pm. Stadium tours depart hourly and a ticket for both the museum and a stadium tour costs approx. €12.50.
